Steep Island is named for, er, being Steep. And an island. Pretty obvious really, but what a lot of people aren't aware of is that it’s one of the best places in the country to see tube worms. Lots and lots of tube worms. Tube worms are very cool creatures indeed. They are commonly attached to rocks, shells, floats and piers, and Steep Island seems to be magnet for them. They can be found at a depth of about 50 foot down, inhabiting waters to around 350 deep. These fascinating, and quite beautiful bouquets are filter feeders, meaning they feast on tiny microscopic organisms. Happy Halloween! Pacific Pro Dive & Marine Adventures 19th Annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest was a huge success this year. Over 15 divers turned out, half in fancy dress, to submerge beneath the waves, pumpkin in one hand, dive knife in the other. We had a ton of prizes to give away, all gratefully donated by our sponsors. We’d also like to give a huge thank you to Siefferts Farm Market for donating the pumpkins. Pacific Pro Dive & Marine Adventures' 19th annual Halloween underwater pumpkin carving contest is back. Like all good horror movies, a sequel was inevitable. Divers arrive at 10am, Comox Marine Park, Sunday October 25th, and begin carving at 11am. A $10 registration fee secures each diver a pumpkin, hotdog and a raffle ticket. This year we have more prizes than ever! Today, October 1st, 2015 is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Capilano, now one of British Columbia’s top dive sites. The 122 foot long cargo steamship struck a submerged object at approximately 9:25pm on the night of September 29th, 1915. Captain Nelson was not immediately informed of the strike, as it was so soft crew members believed the vessel just hit a log, a common occurrence in BC waters.
