Discover the Secrets of the Octopus

Hey ocean explorers and adventure enthusiasts!

We've got some thrilling news to share with you. If you're passionate about the underwater world like we are, get ready to embark on an extraordinary journey with National Geographic’s latest series, "Secrets of the Octopus," now streaming on Nat Geo TV, Disney+ and Hulu!

What makes this series so special? Well, for starters, it shines a spotlight on one of Canada’s most iconic marine creatures—the Giant Pacific Octopus. But here's the kicker: it was filmed right here on our beloved Vancouver Island by none other than our very own local divers, Maxwel Hohn, Krystal Janicki, Tynan Callesen and Russell Clark!

Behind the Scenes

Maxwel and Krystal were handpicked to be part of 'Secrets of the Octopus', produced by SeaLight Pictures and spearheaded by Executive Producer James Cameron, with the charismatic Paul Rudd narrating the series.

Their mission? To capture the essence of the Giant Pacific Octopus, a magnificent creature that calls the temperate waters of the Pacific Northwest its home. And boy, did they deliver!

Meet the Star: Giant Pacific Octopus

From its astounding size to its fascinating behaviors, the Giant Pacific Octopus truly steals the show. Weighing in at around 33 pounds on average, with an arm span of up to 14 feet (imagine that!), these creatures are nothing short of awe-inspiring. And let's not forget their incredible intelligence—they've got nine brains and three hearts, talk about being multi-talented.

But what sets them apart is their ability to connect with humans, as Krystal Janicki, affectionately known as the 'Octopus Whisperer,' can attest to. Her encounters with these gentle giants are nothing short of magical, and her respect and admiration for them shine through in every scene.

The Adventure Unfolds

Filming these elusive creatures wasn’t without its challenges. Octopuses are masters of camouflage, blending seamlessly into their surroundings. But Maxwel and Krystal were determined to find their hero character, and after hundreds of hours of underwater exploration, they struck gold—or should we say, octopus!

Their encounters with these creatures, from curious arm extensions to heartwarming greetings, made for some truly unforgettable moments. And let’s not forget the breathtaking visuals captured right here on Vancouver Island, with help from our local friends at Ocean Fix in Campbell River.
